the Black “family-owned” business vs. the impossible SBA eligibility test
SBA: There is no such thing as a Family Business in the Black Community!
Dear PhillyGhostWriter
When my husband and I applied for a loan with an SBA Lender, we were advised that the SBA has no provisions for a “Mom & Pop-type” Business Entity. We could qualify as a Minority-owned business but, the SBA favors funding Female-owned businesses at this time. However, if I, as a female, could claim 51% ownership of the business, prove that I was at least 25% Black and, could operate the business without the expertise and financial assets of my husband, I could be considered as a Female business owner for an SBA Loan. Otherwise, we would be considered as a Minority-owned business and, the SBA prioritizes funding Female-owned businesses at this time.
My husband and I are equal partners in life. We are not in a 51/49 % marriage/business-ownership relationship. If anything, our children have 51% ownership because they get 100% of the proceeds that go towards their future. We should not be penalized because of our family-unit structure. We should not have to compromise our spiritual beliefs about our family just to qualify for an SBA Loan.
We want to visually protest these SBA Policies by showing that we are a viable business, we do excellent work, we operate in the Black Community and, we are proud to tell our clients that WE ARE A BLACK “FAMILY-OWNED BUSINESS!” We want to show our customers who we are and what we do without just showing them photos of me with my camera on a photoshoot, my husband on his MAC creating graphic designs, or our oldest son managing the business operations with his “QuickBooks” accounting programs on his iPad, or my younger sons packing and labelling orders for shipping.
I need the perfect “leave behind” item, the perfect vehicle that demonstrates how the Black Family-Owned Business Is alive and well and contributing to the economy of the Black Community.
I want to show that our business exists because We are One God-One Family Forever from Our immersion into the Baptismal Waters to Our re-emergence in Victory through the Resurrection of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Any ideas?
